Winter is around the corner and it is a wonderful time of year. This season is all about nourishing stews and soups and snuggling up in layers of merino wool. The smell of log fires on the cold morning breeze is a very happy memory of mine.

It is also the season when our immune systems need a boost. Winter cough, colds and chills make their presence known during the colder months in particular, and maintaining wellness is a key focus for me at this time.

The best time to work on winter wellness is now, during the autumn months. The good news is that there is a lot that you can do to build up your immunity and keep yourself well.

Essential oils are a key part of winter wellness for us but we do a lot more. We focus on eating seasonally with lots of soups and warming meals. Keeping hydrated with tepid water and getting outside as much as we can for essential Vitamin D is a must. Eating citrus fruit is a great idea and supplementing with Vitamin C when needed will also support our bodies.

I am especially vigilant with essential oils through winter and try as hard as I can to be consistent. There will be times when I forget or life gets in the way but I aim for a twice daily application of oils and set the diffusers every night. The oils I will be using once again through this winter for wellness are…

On Guard (Protective Blend)

If I was stranded on a dessert island I would be hard pressed to pick an oil over On Guard to take with me. This is our most used oil and is the Guardian of our immunity. My kiddies have not been to the doctor in two years and I mostly credit On Guard with this. We use this oil every single night in their bedroom diffusers and use a roller ball under their feet and up their spines.

On Guard is a potent mix of Wild Orange, Rosemary, Clove, Cinnamon and Eucalyptus. These oils are powerful anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal immune stimulants. We use this oil ALL the time in winter- it’s our foundational line of defence.

Tea Tree

This is such a familiar oil to us and is a much loved smell. Tea Tree has a wonderful anti-septic smell and that’s exactly what it does. It has 12 times the anti-septic power of a phenol, and I use this when we start to feel “the tickle” at the back of our throats or can feel our immune system start to take a bit of strain. In the kids this manifests as unexplained grumpiness! I have a roller ball ready to go in the bathroom and start using this when needed as our second line of defence. Often On Guard and Tea Tree are enough to stop a bug/ infection in it’s tracks but if they do not them we roll out the big gun….

Oregano

This “hot” oil (meaning it should always be diluted topically) is a powerhouse. It is helpful against antibiotic resistant bacteria and also viruses. It is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, anti-viral and a strong immuno-stimulant. This is the third line of defence and will support the work that Tea Tree and On Guard are already doing. I use this under the feet and in a roller ball when we are fighting sickness.

Easy Air/ Breathe (Respiratory blend)

This is a blend that supports the respiratory system, made up of Laurel, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, lemon, Ravensara and Cardemom. This is designed to be breathed in to directly support the lungs. This blend is a staple in the bedroom diffusers along with On Guard at night. Coughs are a common part of winter and this blend is a fantatic tool in maintaining or regaining respiratory wellness. A little secret is that this Blend will also help with sleep!

These 4 oils are our winter wellness kit. There are other oils we add to deal with specific issues but I try to keep things as simple as possible, and these 4 oils/ oil blends are easy to remember and easy to use. They are ALL part of the top 10 oils that come in the enrolment packs. The top 10 oils give you a modern natural medicine kit and are well worth having in your home.
