A couple of weeks ago I ate a food from before Paleo. And proceeded to come out in a bumpy rash all over my body. It lasted about 2 weeks and I realised that I need to figure out how to detox my skin fast.
I have done a ton of research as detoxing as an all over body detox experience needs to be easy to make and easy to do. Plus I want to detox the kiddies as well so it needs to be as pleasant as possible.
I have found two ways of detoxing the skin that I have tried out and both work well. They are easy to do and the detox in one case is easy to make. One works better with kiddies than the other but I like both…
Dry Body Brushing
This involves brushing your skin, showering and then moisturising. You need to find a proper body brush with natural coarse bristles and a good non-toxic moisturiser.
Dry body brushing has a ton of benefits:
- Dry body brushing helps to shed dead skin cells which makes skin smoother and brighter. It encourages skin renewal too.
- It assists in improving vascular blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. By releasing toxins, it encourages the body’s discharge of metabolic wastes so the body is able to run more effectively. And if your skin is trying to get rid of toxins, this will help the skin release them.
- Dry skin brushing rejuvenates the nervous system by stimulating nerve endings in the skin
- Dry skin brushing helps your skin to absorb nutrients by eliminating clogged pores.
Start with circular motions from the ankles upwards, following the flow of lymphatic fluid which works up the body to the heart. Start slowly with as little pressure as possible.
Shower afterwards and then moisturise. I like to use an unscented lotion and add essential oils. The skin’s pores will be open and this is a great chance to get some healing benefits right into the skin.
I use a combo of doTERRA Geranium, Frankincense and Lavender essential oils. These oils are amazing for the skin and heal and tone. Just add a drop of each to a dollop of lotion.
Right, I can’t lie, dry body brushing is kind of ouchy. I am not used to it and it’s not a relaxing experience. However my skin feels incredible afterwards so I am making this a habit. I can’t see the kids enjoying this at all so I had to find another method for them…
Skin detox paste
This has been floating around the internet for a while and is a more gentle detox than dry body brushing. It’s a mix of bicarbonate of soda and vodka. That’s it!
Like with dry body brushing this is a technique to open up the skin and dislodge the nasties like yeast, fungus, parasites and petro chemicals that clog up our skin.
Use aluminium free bicarbonate of soda (you will have to get this from a health food store) and the purest vodka you can find. At least triple distilled and made from either grains or grapes.
Fill a glass jar that you can put your hand into, 3/4 full of the bicarb and then top up with vodka. I wasn’t super specific with quantities. You are making a paste that you can spread over your body so add the vodka a little at a time and stir, then add vodka again.
I added about 30 to 40 drops of doTERRA’s Detoxification blend called Zendocrine. This will aid in the detox process.
To use, get into the shower and wet your skin, then turn off the water and using a loofah scrub your body from head to toe with the paste. Then shower the paste off- so simple!
Afterwards use the unscented lotion again with doTERRA’s Geranium, Lavender and Frankincense.
This method is a lot easier for the kiddies to take. I use limited amounts on them and don’t scrub them down too much. After the shower and I have moisturised them, they smell amazing.
The recommendation is to use the Skin Detox paste every day for a week and then weekly after that.
The body brush method is not something I can do every day at the moment as my skin is too tender. I am doing it weekly at the moment.
Detoxing the skin is so important as it’s our largest organ. I haven’t detoxed it ever so this is a new thing for me/ us. I am loving it so far!
