I have washed my hair every second day for most of my adult life. It’s what I learned from my mother, who was both gorgeous and elegant and I had no reason to question the way she took care of her hair.

As I have learned more about my body and what it needs, I realized that in fact, we should be washing our hair less often. Washing your hair too often can strip your scalp of natural oils and lead to dry and brittle hair.

But washing less frequently can be a hard habit to break and I want my hair to look as good to day one as day 3.

Cue the use of dry shampoo. Dry shampoo is well, dry, and it has ingredients in it to help to absorb extra oil which can make your hair look “greasy”.

But you know me, I want to steer clear of the fake-smelling pharmacy poison and use a low-tox version. I also want it to be effective, smell good and have some essential oils thrown in the mix.

Impossible I hear you say?

Not at all! I make my own dry shampoo, which ticks all the boxes AND is really economical and easy to make. I am onto my second batch and it’s amazing.

Here is the recipe. It’s all natural and the addition of essential oils nourish the hair follicles and scalp.

This recipe is from dōTERRA’s blog but I have changed the essential oils a little. I picked essential oils that will stimulate and encourage hair growth:

Ingredients

For light hair dry shampoo:
¼ cup arrowroot powder
2 drops Cedarwood oil
2 drops Rosemary oil
2 drops Peppermint oil

For dark hair dry shampoo:
2 tablespoons arrowroot powder
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
2 drops Cedarwood oil
2 drops Rosemary oil
2 drops Peppermint oil

Instructions

Put arrowroot powder, cocoa powder (if using), and essential oils into food processor
Pulse until well combined
Store in glass jar
To use your dry shampoo, apply powder with old make-up brush to roots and oily parts of hair with a large make up brush. I apply the powder and then wait for a couple of minutes, then brush my hair from root to tip.

Your hair will go from blah to fabulous and look like it’s freshly washed. Win!
