10 ways to use dōTERRA Lemon essential oil

Lemon essential oil is probably the most used essential oil of all, and for good reason! This humble citrus oil is one of the MOST versatile and can be used in a myriad of ways. We use Lemon essential oil every single day and go through bottles of it. Luckily it’s one of the cheapest oils due to how easy the oil is to get out of the fruit and how readily available Lemon is.

Here are some interesting facts about Lemon essential oil:

  • It takes 45 Lemons to get a 15ml bottle of essential  oil
  • Lemon oil is taken from the rind of the fruit.
  • The lemons are cold-pressed and not distilled to get the essential oil. The fruit is so juicy that there is no need to do anything other than squeeze it!
  • dōTERRA sources essential oils from the place in the world that the plant grows best, for Lemons this is Cyprus. So we have lemon oil from one of the smallest countries in the European Union, which as you can imagine from the amount of Lemon oil we use, is benefitting the local economy (win!)

Lemon has constituents of d-limonene, alpha pinenes and beta pinenes. What qualities would this bring to the oil? It means that the essential oil has antiseptic, duiretic, antioxident, antibacterial, detoxification, disinfectant, mucolytic, atringent and degreasing properties. That means this essential oil is a jack of all trades and is uplifting, invigorating and refreshing.

Here are 10 ways that you can use Lemon oil:

  1. Detoxing– lemon oil can gently help to detox the kidneys and liver. Put a drop of oil into a full glass of tepid water and drink first thing in the morning.
  2. Allergies– Lemon oil is part of the allergy trio of essential oils, the others are Lavender and peppermint. Lemon oil helps with congestion and mucus. Diffuse Peppermint, Lemon and Lavender and take 1 drop of each in a veggie capsule with a full glass of water, 3x a day during an allergic reaction.
  3. Runny nose– Rub a drop of Lemon oil over the bridge of the nose to relieve a runny nose. This works really well on kiddies too!
  4. Water retention– Massage diluted Lemon oil into the lower legs and feet and take a capsule with 2x drops of oil with a full glass of water.
  5. Jet lag- Lemon oil pairs well with Peppermint oil to give you a burst of energy and help you focus when jet lagged or very tired. Use a drop of both in the palms of your hands, rub together and inhale. This will clear your head, help you focus and wake you up.
  6. Balance your PH levels: This is such a goodie as an alkaline body is a healthy body!Put a drop of oil into a full glass of tepid water and drink first thing in the morning.
  7. Baking– Lemon is one of the best flavours in baking! Try making Paleo Lemon & Raspberry Cake  or Paleo Lemon biscuits.
  8. Concentration– Diffuse 2x drops of Lemon oil and 2x drops of Rosemary essential oil to help with focus and concentration.
  9. Heartburn & reflux– Take a drop of Lemon essential oil with a drop of Ginger essential oil in a capsule with a full glass of water.
  10. Household Cleaner– Lemon is a natural degreaser so add to a  simple water based counter top spray along with On Guard essential oil blend to make a cleaner that will cut through grease AND be naturally anti-bacterial.

These are only 10 uses of Lemon, I could have listed at least 10 more! Lemon essential oil is a “must have” in your natural medicine cabinet. Not to mention how amazing it is to cook with! Try adding Lemon oil to a bottle of olive oil and use in a salad dressing, it’s so yum! I could go on and on but seriously, you NEED this essential oil in your life. It’s incredible.

anti-aging essential oils with dōTERRA

I have always been a lover of skincare products. I love the evening ritual of using a good face cream or serum.

A few years back I started looking at how skincare products are tested. The fact that we still have animal testing for cosmetics astounds me, so I stopped supporting a couple of skincare brands that continue to test on animals.

Then I turned my attention to what is in skincare products. Cue more horror. And so I entered a wilderness of skincare where I didn’t really know where to turn. Often products that are natural and cruelty free are not the best quality and as I have sensitive skin, I would often react to them. Organic and natural skincare is often pricey and I spent a lot on products that I would potentially react to.

I became more and more limited with choice until I decided to start making my own.

Essential oils opened up a whole new world for me. A safe effective world where I could trust that the products were:

  1. Safe
  2. Effective & powerful
  3. Cruelty free
  4. Ecomonical as the bottle of oil last a LONG time.

There are some essential oils that are incredible as part of an ati-aging skin regime. Here are the best ones for you. After I have told you about them I will tell you how to make your OWN anti-aging serum! This serum is amazing- smells so good and my skin feels and looks better after only a week using the serum!

Frankincense

Frankincense is the King of Oils and is a powerful healing oil. This oil has the ability to strengthen skin and improve its tone, elasticity, defense mechanisms against bacteria or blemishes, and appearance as you age. It can also be beneficial for fading of stretch marks, surgery scars or stretch marks.

Frankincense can also help in the appearance of sunspots or age spots and is a powerful astringent, meaning it helps protect skin cells. Frankincense is a critical essential oil in preventing and treating aging skin. The oil tightens and firms skin, which makes it THE most important essential oil for anti-aging!

Geranium

With its beautiful flowery scent, Geranium essential oil is one of the best essential oils for both skin and hair.

Its natural astringent properties tighten skin thereby reducing large pores, regulating sebum as well as toning & firming aging skin. This essential oil also promotes cell renewal and proper blood circulation. In addition Geranium essential oil offers antioxidant properties.

Sandalwood

The natural astringent properties of Sandalwood essential oil help tighten, firm & improve the tone of aging skin. Using sandalwood essential oil protects skin cells from UV radiation and sun damage. It contains potent sesquiterpene compounds and skin regenerative properties that improve circulation and promote smoother looking skin.

Helichrysum

Helichrysum essential oil is widely used in skincare preparations, usually for anti-aging purposes. It has incredible healing properties for tissues, particularly skin.

The benefits of Helichrysum essential oil are said to occur at a cellular level, restoring the cell structures that spread and thin with age.

Myrrh

Myrrh has long been used as a perfume, incense, and medicine in Africa and the Middle East. One of its most common forms is as an essential oil. It has been proven to heal wounds and is packed with anti-oxidents. This will help reverse aging in the skin.

Myrrh essential oil can be used topically to smooth out aging skin and prevent under eye wrinkles from forming.

Lavender Oil

Lavender is another incredible oil for skin. Lavender helps heal skin issues, burns and cuts.

Another anti-inflammatory oil, Lavender essential oil is a go-to for safe and restorative skin treatments. It soothes, calms and restores skin tissues.

ANTI-AGING SKIN SERUM

This skin serum is incredible. Filled with nourishing carrier oils and anti-aging essential oils, it will hydrate and feed your skin.

I have used Frankincense, Geranium, Sandalwood and Helichrysum. You can also substitite/ add Myrrh or Lavender.

You will need a glass botttle/ vial. I used an empty clean 15ml dōTERRA oil bottle as the glass quality is very good. And I have 4,000 of them!

You will also need a dropper, I got mine here.

Aside from the essential oils you will need carrier oils & other ingredients:

  • The best carrier oil is Jojoba. It is nourishing and ligh weight (non-greasy). This is an essential component of the serum.
  • Vitamin E oil which includes fat-soluble antioxidants that supply nutrients for your skin to help you age slower.
  • An oil high in anti-oxidants is next, like Pomegranate seed oil or Raspberry seed oil.
  • Another option, which I may try next time in place of either the Vitamin E oil or the Raspberry seed oil, is Rosehip oil.

Here’s the recipe:

  • 8 drops of Frankincense
  • 8 drops of Geranium
  • 8 drops of Sandalwood
  • 4 to 6 drops of Helichrysum
  • ¼ teaspoon of Vitamin E oil
  • ¼ teaspoon of Raspberry seed oil
  • Fill the rest of the bottle with Jojoba oil

Apply 4 to 6 drops to the face and neck morning and night.

This is not an exact science and the quantities are approximate. However these quantities have given me the most amazing face serum so I would start here. This face serum is effective, economical and smells divine, what’s not to love?

balancing womens hormones with dōTERRA essential oils

Our bodies are driven by hormones, and each moth there is an ebb and flow of hormones through the monthly cycle. If you are like me and have struggled with hormones that at times, have been wildly out of balance, this monthly cycle of hormones may not seem like a gift!

It’s hard to be grateful for our hormones when they are unbalanced, I know. Just one small change in hormone levels can cause an imbalance, with side effects like weight gain, fatigue, depression or infertility. Having had unbalanced hormones for most of my life, I know how good it feels to finally have some hormone harmony in my body.

When looking at our hormones it’s best to take a holistic approach. The definition of the word holistic is: the whole is more than merely the sum of its parts. If a certain hormones are out of balance it is likely that the imbalance is caused by another issue. The first place to start is back at the basics. Eat whole unprocessed food, drink clean water, reduce toxic load, move your body and reduce daily stress as much as possible. This will give your body a foundation of good health which will make it easier to identify other areas that are not working as well as we would like.

After that start by having a look at your adrenal health. Your adrenal glands are responsible for how you cope with stress. If you’re trying to juggle a job, family and the demands of everyday life, you are likely to have overworked adrenals.

Cortisol, the “stress hormone” is produced by the adrenal glands and regulates your body’s response to stress. Out of balance cortisol levels lead to exhaustion, an inability to calmly deal with stress, food cravings and brain fog. There are a couple of essential oils that support the adrenals: Basil & Rosemary.

Basil

Basil essential oil increases the body’s natural response to both physical and emotional stress while conditioning you to cope better. I have been using basil for a couple of weeks now. It’s been a long school term with a busy business and home life. I was feeling exhausted. I started using a couple of drops of Basil (with the same amount of carrier) and rubbed it over my adrenals, above the kidneys, twice a day. I feel more energised which is amazing!

Basil also soothes anxiety and is the Oil of Renewal emotionally. Basil strengthen the adrenals and restores the body to it’s natural thythms of sleep, activity and rest.

Rosemary

Rosemary also supports the adrenals. It is good for mental, physical and emotional fatigue. Use Rosemary diffused or with Basil and Peppermint to give you a boost of energy. Rosemary is also excellent for the memory and can improve brain function. No more brain fog!

Essential oils for Hormone support

There’s a super-group of essential oils called adaptogens. This group of essential oils are unique because they have are able to heal by stimulating and relaxing. They are adaptable depening on your body’s unique needs.

These oils are incredible at supporting hormone imbalance where a gland may be under-funtioning in one area and over functioning in another. Adaptogenic essential oils are capable of balancing opposing conditions without creating further imbalance which brings your body into harmony. Combining these oils together is a powerful hormone balancing tool.

The three main hormones that need to be balanced in a woman’s body are oestragen, progesterone and testosterone.

Clary sage

Clary Sage has a particular affinity with the female reproductive system. This floral essential oil is the best oil to support oestrogen imbalance. Because many health issues — from oestrogen- based cancers to infertility — stem from excess oestrogen in our bodies, clary oil is especially great for balancing hormones in women. Clary sage oil helps level out oestrogen production in the body.

Clary Sage has an oestrogen-like structure to help return balance to the female reproductive system and antispasmodic properties to relieve pain and menstrual cramping. Combine Clary Sage and Spearmint for menstrual cramp pain and reduction. This oil stimulates the pituitary gland, which regulates ovulatory and sex hormone function. Clary sage is also a uterine tonic pairs well with Geranium.

Thyme oil

Thyme essential oil has progesterone balancing effects and can help boost progesterone production. Women are often low in this hormone and reduced levels of it can cause some serious side effects, including weight gain, mood swings, PCOS, infertility and fatigue.Thyme oil benefits the body by improving progesterone production.

Thyme essential oil also stimulates the immune system and is a great example of how an oil can work in multiple areas in our bodies.

Sandalwood

Of the three essential oils for hormone support, sandalwood essential oil is very effective at balancing out testosterone levels in both men and women. Testosterone is an important hormone for women as well as men, however the levels we need differ a lot!

Sandalwood has also been used as a natural aphrodisiac, making it a desired ingredient in perfume since ancient times.

How to use Hormone Balancing Oils

I would suggest making a serum. Use a little 15ml bottle (one of the empties you may have rather a lot of!) with a dropper on the top.

Hormone balancing Serum

  • 20 drops clary sage oil
  • 20 drops thyme oil
  • 10 drops sandalwood oil
  • Fill the rest of the 15ml bottle with Evening Primrose oil as a carrier

Mix all oils together in a 15ml bottle and apply 5 drops to the neck twice daily.

For additional support I would recommend a good supplement. I take this one daily.

If you are thinking about conception, there are different oils that could support you- here they are.

All the best with balacing your hormones and feeling more “you”.
